A $1 million rebuild of Woodville Hockey Club’s clubrooms will commence in early 2021 and is expected to be completed by July 2021. This exciting project will deliver expanded and significantly improved facilities for our members, community, visiting teams and other valued users of our facility. We acknowledge the support of the City of Charles Sturt

Need to know – the latest:

  • As we say goodbye to 2020, we are also preparing to farewell our current clubrooms.  Working bees to pack up and clear out are planned – your support is appreciated.
  • A builder will be appointed by the City of Charles Sturt following the close of the call for tenders in early December 2020.
  • Once the builder has been appointed, we will have a clearer understanding of project timeframes. This will help us to prepare our grounds and members for the 2021 pre-season.
  • Our pitch and grass grounds will remain available and accessible for training and games during the rebuild process. We are working closely with the City of Charles Sturt to ensure that temporary facilities and infrastructure are in place to support a great experience for our members and visitors.

About the project

Woodville Hockey Club commenced proactively working towards an upgrade of our outdated clubrooms in 2017. Extensive engagement with members, our local community and the City of Charles Sturt, via patron and long-time supported Cr Oanh Nguyen, resulted in the allocation of $20,000 from the City of Charles Sturt in 2019/20 to explore options and develop concept designs.

In September 2020, the City of Charles Sturt announced the allocation of $1 million to support a full demolition and rebuild. Funding is being provided from the federal government’s COVID economic stimulus package. We acknowledge the City of Charles Sturt in providing this much needed funding. It is a significant investment in our club’s future and will enable us to continue to grow and attract new members and users.

We look forward to our upgraded clubrooms providing a welcome and inclusive space that supports local recreation and community life. The new clubroom design was developed using the original feedback from the club community, as well as the practical needs and functions of the building to service the community. It will include:

  • 4 changerooms
  • New bar, canteen and office facilities
  • Views of the synthetic pitch from the bar and multipurpose space
  • Improved accessibility

FAQs – your questions answered:

Who will be managing the build?

The City of Charles Sturt will be project managing the build process. Once appointed, the builder will assume control and responsibility for the specific clubrooms site. Once this occurs, we will no longer have access to the building. WHC will continue to have responsibility for the management of the pitch and grass playing fields.

Where is the funding being sourced from?

City of Charles Sturt funding allocation from the Federal Government, through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ‘COVID Stimulus package’.

When is the demolition and build likely to start and finish?

Building timeline yet to be finalised. Currently estimated to commence early in 2021 with at least a 6-month build.

Will the building look exactly as proposed?

Following the appointment of the builder, detailed building design will commence. There may need to be some minor adjustment to the building design to ensure the project is completed within the allocated budget.

Are the plans draft concept designs or finalised?

The project has a finite budget and footprint and changes are unlikely.  The City of Charles Sturt Council commissioned the plans and design work in consultation with the Woodville Hockey Club with careful consideration of the current and anticipated future needs of the club and community.

What is included in the build?

Building structure, plus verandahs and associated paving, standard fixtures and fittings, commercial grade floor coverings, heating and cooling.

What isn’t included in the build?

Furniture and effects including whitegoods and other similar equipment.

The building work will clash with the Winter Hockey season. Will the synthetic hockey pitch be accessible during this time?

All efforts are being made to retain full access to the synthetic hockey pitch for the duration of the build including water and lighting. Access will be from the Northern Eastern and North Western gates.

Will there be any temporary facilities during the build?

Temporary change rooms and toilets are likely to be placed in the car park area for the duration of the build. We are currently working through alternatives for the provision of food and beverages.

Will the grass fields be accessible during the build?

Whilst there is likely to be disruption during the build, all efforts will be made to minimise the impact to the playing fields so these can continue to be utilised for sport and recreational activities.

Who will be responsible for running and maintaining the new facilities?

Woodville Hockey Club Inc will continue to occupy and run the facilities/grounds under licence from the City of Charles Sturt Council.  Woodville Hockey Club will own the building for the lifetime of the asset.

Can other users enjoy the facilities?

Other community groups currently hire or sub-licence the facilities and these types of arrangements can continue.

As a member of the Woodville Hockey Club, how can I help?

We will be calling on the support and input of our members to help prepare for the rebuild, develop creative solutions for temporary club facilities, and to ensure that we are able to open clubrooms with all the furniture and effects that the new space requires. Keep a check on this website and our Facebook page for details.
